چکیده

The extent to which that hospital, under direction of Dr. L. Guttmann, has been responsible for progress in the treatmen'1 paraplegia is well known throughout the world. During the First World War. 80% of the victims of spinal injury died in the first few months. Now, the death'r:j, is less than 8%, and over 85% of the patients treated at Stoke Mandeville are gaiii^. employed, lead a full and interesting social life, and enjoy travel, arts, sport and ^ forms of entertainment. j In this book, Dr. Walsh describes what paraplegia means to the sufferer and to family, and how greater awareness of the problem in general can result in increa5 help in the rehabilitation of the victim. The book gives practical information to patient, and to those who help to care for him or are concerned with his welfare-simple terms, sufficient anatomy and physiology is given to understand the daniai?e the nervous system and the symptoms which follow. Reasons are explained for various methods of treatment, and even for refraining from giving some of the ment the patients may wish for. From the onset, the patient and his relatives are led to expect a return to work 3 , active life within the year, but, in spite of the optimism, they are left in no doubt ab ; the seriousness of the condition, the inevitable permanent disabilities, and about fact that rehabilitation involves hard work on the part of the sufferer. There is s?' very interesting, concrete information about every aspect of adjustment the patient ' to make: movement, posture, bowels and bladder function, protection of the skin a care of special equipment. The chapters about transport, wheelchairs and holidays particularly interesting.

SPG3A gene polymorphisms in hereditary spastic paraplegia

Objective: This study aimed to analyze the hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP)/spastic paraplegia 3A (SpG3A) genomic structure as well as the polymorphisms in SPG3G genomic structure by comparing with the normal subjects. Methods: A total of 66 sporadic cases with HSP were collected from April 2014 to September 2016. Genomic DNA extraction was performed, and all coding exons and junction region...

Injuries among individuals with pre-existing spinal cord injury: understanding injury patterns, burdens, and prevention

As a growing body of research has focused on the individual, social, and environmental factors that facilitate life after spinal cord injury (SCI), particular emphasis has been placed on health conditions that are modifiable and preventable. Subsequent injuries are a serious health problem for individuals with SCI. They are a direct threat to further morbidity and mortality, and are both a caus...

[Hereditary spastic paraplegia: up to date].

Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of neurodegenerative disorders that are clinically characterized by progressive spasticity and weakness of the lower limbs. HSP genetic loci are designated SPG1-72 in order of their discovery. In 206 Japanese families with autosomal dominant HSP, SPG4 was the most common form, accounting for 38%, followed by...

Human-induced pluripotent stem cells pave the road for a better understanding of motor neuron disease.

While motor neuron diseases are currently incurable, induced pluripotent stem cell research has uncovered some disease-relevant phenotypes. We will discuss strategies to model different aspects of motor neuron disease and the specific neurons involved in the disease. We will then describe recent progress to investigate common forms of motor neuron disease: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, heredit...

Knockdown of Pnpla6 protein results in motor neuron defects in zebrafish

Mutations in patatin-like phospholipase domain containing 6 (PNPLA6), also known as neuropathy target esterase (NTE) or SPG39, cause hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP). Although studies on animal models, including mice and Drosophila, have extended our understanding of PNPLA6, its roles in neural development and in HSP are not clearly understood. Here, we describe the generation of a vertebrat...
